As I am in the position of selling most of my calves off the farm for breeding I do sell the culls and some commercial calves by way of auction. I have sold by presort, regular, satelite, and directly to feedlot. Looking over things the last while I do not see a trend to one kind of way. I have had as many calves sell quite well one way as a other. I am looking for opinions on this subject as well as reasons why you sell that way.

I sell my big uniform steers in a regular sale where my name, hopefully, gets me a premium. Likewise my yearling hfrs. I like to sell my second cut calves in a presort, because then they won't be cutting out a little tailender or an off color calf and selling him as a single. The buyers just steal those singles! I think a sucessful presort is due to the people doing the sorting and the general quality of the cattle in an area. They are a lot of extra work for the auction mart involved. They aren't for everyone but for a smaller producer they work quite well.
