Happytrails, I wasn't aware that anyone had ever claimed or intended that CCIA tags be used to establish ownership. After all a calf tagged at herd of origin and age verified carries only that information with it as things stand at the moment under the CCIA system. If a female calves goes through 2 or 3 hands before becoming someone's breeding cow she will only have her herd of origin and dob recorded in the database - this system was never about ownership.
Was there not a case in Calgary a few years back that proved that brands did not prove ownership of cattle? I think it was to do with the Bonnett situation at Ponoka with the bank, feeder co-op, cattle owner, custom feeder disputing ownership. I can't remember the specifics but I remember the outline of the case and the news item that brands no longer proved ownership.
