Problems at Lakeside?

Has anyone heard about the problems at Lakeside feedlots down at Brooks? Apparently the NRCB has them under some kind of order for violating regulations dealing with spreading manure. The way I heard it they have been stockpiling manure and not spreading it in accordance with their license.
The information I got is they very well could lose their license and this might affect whether the packing plant could stay in business!

On the pendulum of more regulation or less
regulation, I would guess the Harper gov't swings
towards less regulation. I can't see us getting this
money back or Harper further restricting RRs in the
future. The only thing I could hope for is better service
for the money we pay.

I believe the Government fixed the problem after CN and CP went over the Cap and lost the case before the courts.

The WGRF got the $70M which included a penalty for going over the Transportation Cap.

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Wouldn't put anything past the regulation Nazi's; but, surely if the weather conditions wouldn't allow for spreading, then they must put it somewhere... last year, they would have had NO opportunity to spread.. it rained constantly.... there are other activities like cutting feed etc... that must be done when the sun shines... surely a few poo piles would not cause the closure of this facility....

They may need to hire some extra help this fall to get it spread (after harvest).... maybe the paper pushers should grab a shovel and get with the program.

The whole process of ending the monopoly has
to include the rail service review and changes to
the Canada Grain Act in regards to the CGC.

The rail service review outlined a " penalty
process" for both the shipper and the railway
should either fail to perform. At least that's what
I understand, someone correct me if I'm wrong.
If these measures aren't addressed when we go
to an open market this overcharging as well as
failure to perform will be even more prevalent.

I don't agree with much the cwb does but they
did have the ability to somewhat keep the
railways in line.

Or maybe it's just another example of Nilssons thinking they are above the law, they can bend and break the rules that others must follow and get off without recourse?
Remember the Competition Bureau only approved their takeover of Lakeside on the condition that there would not be a detrimental effect to ranchers with regard to convenience and competition. Calgary closed, Moose Jaw closed tells another story.
I have no sympathy with them - if you want to keep cattle in factory farm conditions expect to be regulated to factory standards.

I understand the changes to CTA legislation must be reintroduced as they were lost when the election was forced.

There were very helpful shipper freindly amendments proposed. The CWB has done some work to force arbitrage... much more could have been initiated by Goodale had he truly been working for growers. This is what I was talking about from 2000-06.

Goodale and the CTA failed to do their jobs... and grain growers paid a huge cost. Much more than $300M. Market arbitage was stopped in so many ways. Small grain handlers paid so much... including with the destruction of their lifes work and businesses.

Lakeside has been delivering manure locally for years. With a soil test, you got manure dumped on your place for you to spread. Within about 30 miles. You got alot of bunk material and rocks for your "free" manure. This winter they decided to stockpile manure on an irrigated quarter just west of the lot. Covered most of it. The idea was to reduce trucking costs by letting it dry down before hauling. They bought a bunch of land up north where, rumour is, it will be spread. Problem is with all that snow then rain between the windrows, it never got done. That's all I know. Haven't been by there in probably a month.

Now the way I heard it is pretty what grassfarmer says. Trying to do things on the "cheap" and not living up to their requirements. It was not weather related.
