All good forage. When there is a true Canadian company ready to go that is not tied in with the groups that want to keep the North American Cattle supply captive as it is.
These Asian markets have always been available. I am not outright saying that BSE was a plan, however taking advantage of BSE to stop any new comer from selling beef over there certainly was and still is.
Watch the Cargill news channel (I think the ABP/CCA channel broadcasts it regularly too LOL) and you will see producers protesting in Asia and the E.U. over imported product. Visit the countries and you will see people with no use for the "American way" asking how they can buy Canadian product without enhancing the pocket books of the multinational companies they do not trust or have any desire to do business with .
Check out what happened to Creekstone Farms in the USA when they established a potential beachhead in Asia with BSE tested product, or how Canada Gold was shut down with the joke called a new quota system in the E.U. When the quota becomes and commodity bought up by the big boys and maybe never even filled, there is something up....
These markets are open so that the politicians and the big boys and ABP/CCA can slap each other on the back and order up some hookers in Hong Kong. When anyone moves to establish significant product movement into Asia, they can fully expect new games from the status quo to try and stop it.
The one thing I felt good about coming home from Hong Kong is that any fears I may have had concerning a new world order under the top heavy American mold are gone. Asia, and the rest of the world may play along with Rockyfellas and the Cargills and the rest of the gang, but play is definitely the word.
They have been threatened by the Americans long enough, and they have waited for their chance for the collective greedy ego to be exposed and now they are almost ready to pull the real pin and own the threateners.
Gotta admire Asian patients. Even though we are not sure where they will take it...

South Korea Gives Canadian Beef Final Stamp Of Approval
Canadian beef can access market immediately
Ottawa, Ontario, January 20, 2012 – Tremendous news for Canadian cattle producers and processors has come early in the new year, announced Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz and International Trade Minister Ed Fast. Starting today, Canadian beef under 30 months of age can re-enter the South Korean market.
"For the first time in nearly a decade, Canadian beef can be exported again to what was our fourth-largest market, South Korea", said Minister Ritz. "Improved trade with South Korea is a priority for the Canadian agriculture industry and the South Korean Government's co-operation in restoring access to Canadian beef will further strengthen trade relations between our two countries."
"Our government understands the importance of trade to the jobs and livelihoods of hardworking Canadians and their families, and the importance of helping our farmers and producers access global markets," said Minister Fast. "That's why we have consistently fought for fair and open access for our producers and exporters around the world, and against unscientific trade restrictions on Canadian products. Our government has worked tirelessly to ensure the Korean market is re-opened to high-quality Canadian beef, and the Korean Government's decision to restore access is the direct result of these efforts."
The South Korean Government today published their approval of the Import Health Requirements (IHRs) and notified the Government of Canada that all certification conditions are in place, meaning exports can commence from the Canadian beef establishments approved for export.
Canada has worked tirelessly – governments and industry together – to reopen the market. This work included an earlier request for a World Trade Organization (WTO) Panel, based on science and the safety and quality of Canadian beef, which is shipped world wide.
The Canadian beef industry estimates that this restored market access could mean more than $30 million for Canadian producers by 2015. South Korea is the last significant Asian market to lift the ban after the 2003 bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) outbreak.

Some questions:
How much of this "trickle down" benefit will the cow-calf operator receive?...2 or 3 cents a lb. for his/her calves?
Will the exporters be mostly American owned businesses operating in Canada?..or Canadian owned producer groups promoting and selling their own product?

In 2002 the export market for Canadian cattle and beef was worth approximately $4B (pre-BSE). It is 'estimated' that the value of the Korean market for Canadian beef could reach $30M by 2015 (about three quarters of one percent of the value of the pre-BSE export market).

It's not like this is the only place Canada is exporting
to now though Cameron. It may be a small customer
but it's a customer none the less.

But it used to be a big customer.
And now we are supposed to cry "Hail to the Chief" because we've been granted a small sliver of what we lost.
Rather than saying "You guys are so great for getting us back part of what we lost." we should be saying, "OK, that's a start, now get back to work and finish fixing your mistakes. Make sure you learn from it, and don't do more damage in the future."
