Edmonton, AB (March 19, 2012): Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith released the fifth and final Wildrose Commitment to Albertans today – a promise to rural Alberta farmers, ranchers and landowners to uphold their property rights and help bring stability to their operations.
The Wildrose has now released five Commitments in key policy areas. Since Jan. 31, Smith has announced the Wildrose Commitment to Power Consumers, the Wildrose Commitment to Parents on Education, the Wildrose Commitment to Municipalities, and the Wildrose Commitment to Taxpayers.
As part of the Wildrose Commitment to Rural Alberta, a newly elected Wildrose government would:
•Repeal Bills 19, 24, 36, and 50 and halt or reverse all activities under these laws.
•Elevate the status of property rights in Alberta’s Bill of Rights and seek to enshrine property rights in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
•Ensure that land-use laws increasing ministerial power at the expense of property rights can never be passed again.
•Cut red tape by eliminating or amending any ineffective regulations so Alberta’s farmers and ranchers are free to prosper without the weight of government holding them back.
•Improve access to international markets for Alberta agricultural products by working with industry leaders and the federal government to open up foreign markets.
•Bring long-term stability and security to family farms by working with the federal government to introduce insurance reforms to protect Alberta farms from the effects of unpredictable and harmful weather, and to introduce tax reforms such as income-averaging trust accounts, to manage fluctuations in income and savings.
“Wildrose will always stand up for the interests of rural Alberta. That means upholding landowner rights and making sure our farmers and ranchers have every opportunity possible to succeed and prosper,” Smith said.
“Burdensome regulations, dangerous land-use laws and ineffective support programs have seriously compromised our agriculture sector’s ability to compete on the global stage. Our commitment addresses these shortcomings and will allow individual farmers and ranchers to make the most of the opportunities that we know are ahead for their industry.”
