Talked to a guy in the auction mart who owned some cows. Started feeding them Oct.3, 2001. Figured he'd be feeding up to June 1. Big exotic cross cows. Fed them pretty good. Hay at $130 ton, barley at $3.45/bu. straw at 1.5 cents. Figured it cost him about $650 for feed and bedding alone. Got a bad case of scours,lost about 10%. Add on $150/cow for pasture this summer and this guy is going to have $800/cow invested just in feed. Now with his 90% calf crop he is going to need an awfully good price just to break even.
