I have been baling 2 row Metcalfe straw the last couple of days right behind the combine. Really good straw (conventional combine) and lots of it.

What does straw go for in your area? We
have been buying in good conventional
straw with chaff for around $0.025 per
pound delivered.

Whats happening to it Per - is it being chopped for
nutrient value? I always smile at the "high" price of
straw here - its @$140/tonne in Scotland just now
and we paid $85/tonne for it close to 20 years ago.
Its about 2/lb round here.

I have often thought I would like to find
a neighbour who would put a Jones buncher
on the back of their combine. I would
graze the piles in the field, improve
nutrient cycling, reduce weeds, and drop
the nutrients in the field. Can't really
find any takers that are too interested.

How very olde worlde of you Sean!! the neighbours
were talking a couple of years ago about a spray that
you could apply to help breakdown the residue. Why
use your neighbours animals when you can burn
diesel and use agrochemicals instead?

One of the neighbors bought straw for $20/bale.....already baled (JD 567). He had to haul them.
I'm baling my own straw.
There's always been a lot of straw around here. Usually it's there for the taking. People phone around "Do you want any straw"!
Cousin tells me if you don't bale it up it takes a lot more nitrogen to break it down.
