Great post Burbert...you hit the nail square on the head.

Ritz makes some of the strangest remarks at times when he shifts into "ass covering" mode.

sumdumguy, I think you have a charming but naive
idea of what CFIA actually does. In theory it serves to
protect the public interest with respect to inspection
of food production amongst other issues. In fact it
follows closely in the shadows of USDA which is in
turn governed by corporate interests. As such they
have a vested interest in NOT slowing down the
production of large corporate beef plants however
much they are deviating from the rules. It also
explains their zeal for trying to run good, small scale
privately run slaughter facilities out of business.

The same goes for your pesticide question - don't
expect CFIA to be doing any enhanced testing any
time soon. It serves the corporate interest not to raise
sensitive issues like this in the public domain where
the media might make a story out of it.

We as Canadians expect a certain level of care
from our food inspectors. No one here wants to
eat tainted food coming from unhealthy sources.

In an exporting country our food standards
should be unquestionable. As a food consumer, I
expect the government to insure food safety
without question. If we can not depend on CFIA,
then who can we depend on?

The real sad part is even after the US had decertified the XL plant the CFIA continued to let XL sell beef to Canadians stores! Maybe they wanted to get the coolers cleaned out before they shut down or something!
Something isn't quite right here....the meat isn't good enough for the American consumer.....but it's okay to feed to Canadians? What's with that?
Shouldn't the CFIA protect Canadian consumers as well as the Americans do for their citizens?

ASRG - "Shouldn't the CFIA protect Canadian consumers as well..."

Yeah, the way they protected the Canadian cattle herd from BSE!

                Oh wait -

Hey, what, exactly, are they doing?

Burnt - I know you know the answer to your own question.

Their a marketing arm for the American beef industry "stakeholders", the multi-national packers. I'm surprised no-one is talking "conspiracy".
It would not surprise me even a little to see someone on the inside paid a bunch to sabotage the place.
It would not be the first time.
Look at who the benefactors are.

My question is: What test did the USA border patrol use to detect the ecoli, while still being able to contain the entire shipment [meaning they had some sort of "fast-test" for ecoli, other than culturing for days]... if they have a fast-test, why are the slaughter-plants not using it?
