    A good thing?

My old cattleman neighbor says this drought could be a blessing in disguise. He figures when the food chain basically crashes due to no raw product the urbanite will wake up to the fact that farmers have been getting a raw deal for quite some time. He said when the packing houses shut down, the maltsters go broke, the various farm related businesses go belly up then maybe the drought will come home to the city slickers.
I suspect if meat prices rise due to a shortage we will see imports come in like never before. Suddenly there won't be such a great concern about things like blue tongue or FMD! But he could be right about the ripple effect as the Ag related businesses go down. It just might wake up the Canadian consumer to the importance of agriculture in this country? Although it might be too late to save a lot of us.

Cowman, I think we have gone so far from reality in our economy that most people will never be able to differentiate between economic activity and wealth creation. The NDP in Saskatchewan (and most urban people) think that giving somebody a job watching other people (farmers, miners, etc.) produce real goods creates wealth. All it does is move money from one pocket to another and they tax the transaction (withdrawing wealth from the system). That is one of the reasons SK is in such rough shape. I don't think this ignorance will change until the whole economy collapses and people take the time (years) to come to some understanding of what makes things work.

Don't be silly cowman. Everyone knows food comes from the grocery store, not farmers.
