    Consider this?

If you are at that point in your life where you are close to retiring or can see it just down the road in a few years(and the average age of cow/calf producers is close to 60), but are holding unto the cows because you hate to take meat prices for an asset that has shrunk close to 50% in the last year, then consider this. Say you can get 50 cents average for all your cows and they average 1400 lbs. $700...a far cry from the $1300 she was worth last fall! But lets say you have the $6-700 feed that it will take to winter her. So sell both and you have your $13-1400! You can defer the $700 you get for the cow and if you stagger your feed sales you can spread that out over two years.
People need to put emotions aside and look at this business from the cold hard facts of reality. And I do believe a lot of people are doing just that(suddenly there is feed available out there!). And that is a good thing because we need to start being businessmen and not just dumb farmers!

Thanks cowman for echoing my thoughts . It seems that the hobby famer in many folks betrays what they really should be doing. The hobby farmer is entitled but do not stand around looking for a hand out. This hay being brought in to AB is a very generous gesture but these folks receiving it might put some funds in a trust for the needy as appreciation e.g. books or pencils in schools, food banks.
