    to cow/calf produders

what do you think about selling your calves direct to feedlots?
i do have feedlots and i would be interrested to discuss about buying calves direct from producers to iliminate middle people and trying to save on death
waiting for your replies and hope we will discuss about that soon :
    thanx

this is something I have considered in the past as a good idea, but as an average producer with about 80 calves, split heifer/bull, some 400 lbs , some 700 lbs, are the feedlots willing to buy the whole spread? I was told the only way they would talk to you is if you could bring in a whole liner of calves all within about 50 lbs of each other.

well ?? yes you are right abt that but i can handle calves from 425 up to 700 lbs heiffers and steers but sure that we have to sort them before loading
because most of the feedlots have to make lots of same weight and sex to have good gain but most of them are installed to have many size of calves then
the most important in these years is the health of the calves to save as many as we can :
      thanx for your reply

Are you willing to buy out of Manitoba? Will you pay a premium for preconditioned? ie weaned for a least a month. To answer your question yes I am interested.

          hello
yes i buy calves from alberta sask and manitoba so there is no prob to buy them from man.
i need calves in falls and springs i usually cover ashern, winnipeg and ste rose sales but i am tired to pay buyers and calves stand too long in sales barns so i am willing to buy direct from farmers and get them fast to my place .
if we get to an agreement yes i am ready to pay for precondition calves
          thanx for the reply
and wish to hear from you again

sinotte: yes I've given it thought, but was told the same as your previous response - must be uniform, same sex, etc... mine are mostly 500-700lbs. steer/heifer mix, a couple july and august calves, and only 50 head this year, as we had to ruthlessly cull our cow herd this summer... seemed pretty hopeless, but...? what are your thoughts? oh, AND i've got to background them untill at least january (tax reasons)

I think selling direct makes alot of sense. I thought about doing this ever since I started into the cattle biz 7 years ago. although I have sold my calves this year I would like to investigate the possibilty of this next year. Somethings I might have concern over is I let the boys run as boys and band them latter on in the season and then cut.. I have noticed that some start getting bullish looking and have wondered why feedlots and buyers tend to py less for young bulls. Being originally from the sawmill wholesale and retail trade I have grown acustomed to having my customers see what they are getting before I ship. Is this something you would considered.(I farm in northwestern Ontario and most all of my calves usually cross the winnipeg livestock exchange. Notify me here if you would be interested in setting up a dialogue.

I have selled directly to a neighbor that has a feedlot. Its worked well. We negotiate a price and settle on a price per pound at a certain weight and adjust the p[rice with a slide. Its a win /win situation for both buyer and seller.
