Sean you have some poor visibility there! Seriously I hope your plan works. Bale grazing is suspended here for the time being. Snow is deep and any shelter is a distance from the bales. Not worth the risk especially with the weather forecast we've got. Calves are getting mediocre hay and mill run pellets. Cows are getting hay.

We were really foggy today. Moved our
portable slabs down the field, closer to
the bales and put some bedding out.
Moved slabs down to the cows, and opened
up some bales and bush for the young
cows.
I am not sure how much snow it would
take to suspend bale grazing. We have
swath grazed in 2' of snow, and graze
prairie up to 18". I would guess
something over 4' might do it here.
The front is moving in tonight and I am
glad our new calves are all warm and
protected in utero for another couple of
months.

Very good looking cattle Sean
I agree with you've got way too much snow. I
would be willing to trade you to help you out. This
is one of those winters where I have given up
cleaning the yard. What's the point it'll snow and
blow again tomorrow. The sidewalk gets
shoveled out with the loader. Getting bales out of
the rows with the shredder is near impossible,
have to lift them out with the loader first. Crazy
neighbours are piling bush/snow with a D8N and
a D7R what waste of fuel. They must have
nothing better to do.

Good looking calves (yearlings) Sean. They are in terrific condition. I wish mine looked that way. It looks like you have good shelter. The open country down here can bite you if cattle get drifting in a storm. If they breach the fences you don't know how far they will go. If they don't it might be worse. So it is best if you can settle them where they have some shelter and then you know where to look for them in the morning.
