    Silage Pile additives

    Has anyone had experience with adding just white salt as you get closer to finishing up your silage pile for better feed quality of the top layer? I've found some information and in school they didn't teach anything on this. My understanding is that salt is a preservative and it drives me nuts when i tarp the pit and still have a foot or so of terrible s***.

    Why do you have a foot of bad stuff? Is it spoiling
    during the ensiling process or when you are feeding it
    out? When we open our pit there is maybe an inch or
    less poorer stuff right against the sheet. We tend to
    get some heat going on the sides and top when we
    are feeding if the weather is warmer or we are not
    using it quick enough.

      Well not exactly a foot, but you know what i mean.
      And yes spoilage, corn silage. How do you have
      your silage piled? Bunker? Piled on the ground?

        We just pile on the ground then put dirt around the
        edges to hold the sheet tight. I like to go back after a
        few days and put more dirt on to pull down any slack
        on the sheet when it settles. I believe keeping the
        sheet tight like this prevents wastage - don't want to
        see it billowing or rippling in the wind.
