I wouldnt' get too comfortable with assuming that we could get away from snow come May. During the 9 years that I was back home in MB which started in 2003, there were 2 years that it had snowed half a foot in the first week of May and took a week to melt. This was after guys had fields of HRS wheat that had its one leaf poking out of the ground. From my experience, I don't take my toque out of my truck or take off my long-johns until July.
