    Mother nature can kiss it!

So much for calving on the grass this year!!! More
like mud, shit, snow & ice. May 1st calving next
    year! Micotil & V lites....are a flowin. 43 calves so
far. Still 2.5' of snow in the field.

On the positive side of things I have about 75
acres if bush v cut in the last week. That's
inbetween emergency text messages to get back
to the yard 3 heifers are calving uuuuuug. But my
new yard tractor has been bought....MFWD all the
way!! Is should be clean for the first 10' off the
    trailer.

My cows are supposed to start today and every time I check them they are looking at me and saying that this white stuff in the ground is BS.

At the very least it's May 1st next year, but I might give up on spring calving altogether.

Lots of guys calving right now and like most of the April/May calving guys, no one has straw!

When did you start calving allfarmer? those sound like
remedies for older calves than I thought you'd have.

Nine more days, and it will be May. Nine more days and it will be May. Nine more days and it will be May.... I keep telling myself.

We're set up for calving in bad weather, so that's not the issue with us. For us it's the fact that the bulls are supposed to go out next week, and we do not like doing that when the cows are still in the yard. Not enough room for that volume of partying. Not even in our yard. Too risky for the calves. The pasture they usually get let into for breeding has a foot of snow on the level.

However.. the forecast for us calls for plus 8 by the end of the week, so hopefully things start to melt. This is crazy. Last year at this time the cattle were out of the yard, and the pasture was dry with some grass starting to grow already.

Our bulls blew out their wooded fence in the yard,
which got them kicked out on pasture. A few nice
days, then last weekend they had to ride out a
snow storm in the open ( wind from the east,
nasty). Kicking out the yearlings this week, still
have to feed, but at least they'll be out of the mud
and yard. I agree with all the complaints and
comments about the crappy weather. Hopefully
with the full moon on Thursday, the jet stream will
find its way back north, and the warm weather will
FINALLY arrive. Stay safe out there!

Our base herd stated calving April 9 to the exact
day that we predicted when we turned the bulls
out. The new heifers started before we even got
              them home from the mart.

Bought what I could afford and is not completely
whorn out already. Seems like not much under
$50,000 to buy a decent loader tractor. Looks like
from your farm pics Doc you've got a 6400? Likely
a very reliable, all around versatile unit. The one I
bought is a 2008 5425 and ya that's JD the only
color we run around here. Dad worked for a JD
dealers farm for 37 years so that's the color for us.
Tractor is 65hp mfwd, 2 remotes and a joystick
but no loader. Has 650 hours on it. The main
reason I want it now if to run the Ezee Feeder.
Then it's pulling the Hydraulic drive hay rake in
summer. Plus its Made in Georgia not India. I am
not a huge fan of the JD's built in Germany.
American made models are the best. I used to
run a JD 1840 mfwd with canopy and loader. That
was a 60hp unit and saw allot of use.

O ya paid 26k for the tractor. Kathy I hear
ya...bulls here popped some sucker rods out of
our portable panels. The quad winch works great
for popping them back in. We have started to weld
in all the sucker rods on our portable pannels. The
guy that built them said "they'll never pop out" ya
                right.

I wouldnt' get too comfortable with assuming that we could get away from snow come May. During the 9 years that I was back home in MB which started in 2003, there were 2 years that it had snowed half a foot in the first week of May and took a week to melt. This was after guys had fields of HRS wheat that had its one leaf poking out of the ground. From my experience, I don't take my toque out of my truck or take off my long-johns until July.
