    This weather!

    Spring (not!) of 2002 revisited.....
I hate it when it gets below -30 in March. I'm seriously thinking about calving even earlier, like late Dec-Jan.
We started calving 1st of Feb this year.

Actually, sorry I complained. Thing could be much worse. Look at this link from northern NFL:

Terrible cold here in central Sk. yesterday and last night. I had a calf born outside yesterday and a snow drift was around it when I found it. I figure at least a couple hours old. I put it in the barn and it seems fine today but I hope it warms up soon.

This kind of weather takes the enjoyment out of calving even if you have the facilities. It is also taking down my feed and bedding faster than I would like. I was wanting a few extra bales around to go into next year with but they are getting used up pretty fast.

I used to calve Jan. and Feb. and now start the purebreds for the middle of Feb. and commercial the first of March. Next year I am only going to A.I. for the middle of Feb. and no bulls out to at least the first of March if not later. I am finding that the later cows are cycling back just as fast without being run down. The last two cows to calve April 23 and May 1 have calved. One yesterday and one this morning.

In respect to selling bulls I find my good March bulls sell just as high as the Feb. ones with the exception of the A.I. ones.
