    RFID TAG RETENTION TRIAL RESULTS

    [URL=http://s1138.photobucket.com/user/kphaber/media/img427_zps67prqq95.jpg.html][URL]

    Been on the t.V. news and now in the last weeks Western Producer. Check out the CCIA website also.

    Are opening arguments at the Oral Tribunal hearing on June 15 2010 was that there was minimal problems in the calves. The problems of retention were in the adult cows and bulls.

    that was 6 years ago.

    Posted this information specifically for Grass farmer.

      Tried twice to uplcad using photobucket.

      Not working and too busy at this ranch anyway.

      Check Western Producer this last week on CCIA study and check CCIA website posting.

      Back to the drawing board for the CCIA. What Beaurocratic Idea will they think of next.

          Old news but thanks for posting it anyway. Virtually 100% retention to 18 months and 89.7% in mature animals are substantially better retention rates than you have quoted in the past. Indicative of a need for minor refinement perhaps but the tags are performing pretty well. Note that one herd showed 100% retention on the mature cows too - would like to hear what their management was and which tag they used. My guess would be the Zee tag as I think they are the best on the market.

            We have always used Allflex RFID here (other than some brands we tested for the original CCIA program). We got a free sample of the Ztag ones last fall at Agribition, and used them and some Allflex ones in various calves. They seem at least as good retention and the tags are much easier to put in. They pierce the ear better and I think the pliers are better as well.
            We lose a few every year on cows, calves and bulls. I think taking twine off the bales makes a big difference. I am not sure what a better alternative is to the RFID system. Implants are a no go because of migration, brands work for herd identification as long as inspection is in place, but for rapidly collecting and analyzing data and complying with export requirements I think we are stuck with the tags.

              Good article on tags and rules in the Producer this week.
