    Marketing your Beef

Just wanted to find out how you are all marketing your beef this year?

Are any of you looking at innovative ideas to put a better dollar in your pocket?

I will be selling my replacement quality heifers, both purebred and commercial this fall. As well I may hold my light weight steers till early winter and put some extra pounds on them.

Selling the steers next week, sold the poorer cows this week, and selling the poorer producing cows in the end of July. Plus selling the poorer spring calves this fall. This is the time to cull and cull hard. The cows I sold earlier this week went to Winnipeg and were sold on Wednesday. The range on 320 cows was 58 for a low and 72 for a high. Even at 58, who can argue with prices like that?! Can't wait to see the cheque for my 9 cows next week.

And if the drought turns around, might just have to sell of few bred heifers out west and take advantage of any buy-back that might happen.

Open cows are going through the freezer as burger & peperettes.3-4 animals
Steers hope to sell 10% through freezer & see if that keeps up to demand. Had to increase prices abit but still getting about 1300-1500/animal what is killing me is the processing it's 50-50 on whether you make more just selling a hanging 1/2 but you don't get the traffic that way either.
Holding on to alot of heifers this year due to having a good bull But if the price is right they could be gone & only replace about 10%
Long term I would like to be selling at least 25% of produce direct to consumer, figure the margin would be good enough then to have some fun.Might be even able to cut back on cows numbers since I would be making more money.
