Any recommendations for products to supplement hay rations? We are considering 'Range Buster' blocks or mash and wonder if anyone has experience with these or other supplements. We are located in the Crossfield area. Thanks

Before chosing a protein supplement for a hay ration make sure that you have tested your hay first and know that you really need extra protein. If you have already determined that your ration is short protein my suggestion in considering the many available protein supplements is to calculate cost per pound of protein supplied by the supplement to choose the most cost effective, also you must look at the amount of natural protein versus that coming from urea since that will affect the cost of the product. The last aspect to consider is how to make sure each animal will get roughly what they require ie feeding system (free choice versus controlled feeding) if they get too much it is expensive, too little and the cows requirements will not be met. Contact you local beef specialist and they can do some least cost rations for you. Hope this helps.
