I have a calf that is not doing all that good but couldn't really find anything wrong with it. When I checked the cow I noticed her udder looked like the milk had pooled in the bottom of the udder giving it a "pear shape". We brought the cow home and milked her out. The milk was almost clear like water but the udder felt soft and normal. I did suspect mastitis but now I'm not sure. Has anyone else run into this problem.

mastitis is clear and watery and only takes on a thick appearince when it stays in the under and cakes. The calf is keeping the udder from harding and getting sore. try two things.
-give the cow penicillian at least 5 days and keep the calf on the cow to keep the udder from harding.
-then in 5 days see if the watery appeariance is dissappearing and looking more like milk.
Its when the udder cakes and hardens that you loose the quarter etc. The calf by keeping the udder cleaned out should save the udder, but she may not be right and back to full milk till she calves out next year. watch udder when you wean the calf in the fall. This calf may not do all that well, but it will save the cows udder. And the penicillian will kill the germ, and will not harm the calf.
In the fall use Dry Cow up each quarter at weaning.
I'm not a vet, this is just what I've noticed once with a cow that I had a will ago. She was only bad in one quarter and the calf sayed it and she was at full milk the fallowing year in all quarter and I credit the calf for saying the quarter.
