Experience in the UK seems to show that the vast majority of BSE infected cows do not produce calves that will develop BSE even if they are kept until 7 or 8 years old. There have been cases of parent and daughter testing positive for BSE (certainly less than 1 in 100, maybe closer to 1 in a 1000?)On the strength of this they have not been able to rule out maternal transmission.
