Steer calf prices

Saw some pretty good black 600 lb steer calves sell on Monday for $1.48, which is probably about 10 cents less than last year?
They were a little tough on heifers I thought. About 17-20 cents less on same weights.
Fairly decent bred cows in that $1100-1150 range. Highest cows I saw sell were 2nd calf RA cows $1375.
Bred heifers about fat price or a little less.

Those sound like Manitoba prices.

We were off some over the past few weeks, but now they're getting closer to last year's prices. Our last year's price never got close to Alberta's though.

For an honest auction mart price, check out the Ste. Rose Auction mart in Manitoba on any Thursday, usually about 11 am or so. They broadcast part of the sale live on the internet. These are the bigger bunches brought in, and are pretty much the best quality on offer.

I think that is one of the last marts in
Manitoba that actually has some
competing bids in it. I always check it
as a bellweather for our local mart.
They are also very quick to post same-
day results.

Steer calf prices there from today's
sale look pretty good. I've got a
handful of top cut high 4/low 5-weight
May steers to sell Saturday and I am
looking for at least 1.80. Looks like
it might be a good possibility by Ste.
Rose prices.

When I am talking about basis ARSG, I am not talking about feeder cattle prices.

Thank God for grass roots producers that we are closer on feeder cattle than the $250 plus dollars at the boxed beef level.

As long as I can remember there has always been a difference between fat prices in Alberta and Omaha? I don't know about boxed beef prices.
The difference between a 1400 lb steer in Alberta at $1.06/lb and a 1400 lb. steer in Omaha at $1.23 is 17 cents or about $240....which is about the $250 you are quoting?
I think the historic spread is closer to 10 cents....which would be $140?

When does it make sense for the American feedlot to come in here and buy calves....the difference is about 16 cents right now on a 600 lb calf. If our dollar was worth 80 cents....it would be a no brainer, the Americans would be buying all the calves and all the barley to feed them!

If Americans can feed and kill cattle so much cheaper than we can, then all the power to them! I sell barley and feeder cattle....not beef and beer.

Well I was pretty happy with my prices today.

May-born Horned Hereford steers (vaccinate protocol/deworm/proper castration and dehorning/weaned/bunk broke) averaged 506 lbs and went for $1.74, pretty much top dollar for that weight category and beat a lot of other cattle of 6 and 7 weights in regards to total value. Definitely the heaviest May calves at the sale.

Not many yearlings and they took a big hit. Lots on or around the dollar mark.

Cows had to be big, fleshy and age verified to get anywhere near 60 cents.

Bulls were in the 70 cent range, up to 77.

Our cow and bull prices are a bit better than those.
