On the Rutherford show yesterday(a radio talk show out of Calgary) they were going to talk about compensation for beef producers if they need to slaughter 620,000 cows. I never caught the show just heard the blurb where Dave Rutherford said why should he,as a taxpayer, be responsible for bailing out cattlemen. And that is a good question! Why should the Canadian citizen pay? If the industry fails will it really matter to the Canadian consumer in the long run? Cheap imports can fill any shortfall we might have in the future. When unprofitable industries fail people move on and find other things to do.
Here in the rural areas we tend to think the world revolves around us when in fact we are sort a minor player in the minds of most people. We are kind of an embarassment, always having a crisis and whining for money! Sort of like a simple relative that you feel obligated to help but wish they would just go away.
