    Is now the time?

Recently I was talking to a guy who sells feed supplements and was quite surprized that some people are quietly buying bred cows and lining up pasture! He named a few and some of these people are fairly big successful producers and have the money. I suppose you could say they have deep pockets!
We had a good growing year in central Alberta despite an almost total lack of rain and there is a lot of feed around. If this thing turns around next year these guys could make a killing!
I have some extra feed and the price for it is not good. I wonder if I should take a chance and pick up some good young cows? My son is not keen on it, says keep the feed because it could be dry next year. I also suspect he is not too keen on the extra work! He seems to be more interested in the oil field where the money is a more sure fire thing.
Whatever,I think I will start to look around at whats out there. If I can get a real good deal I might just go for it! Do you think this is a good idea or do you think I need to see a shrink?

I'm thinking of it myself. I'm sure not keeping replacement heifers like I usually do. I can sell the calf and buy a bred cow for close to the same money.

You guys are likely on the right track because like usual I am doing the opposite. I am keeping some of my own replacement heifers like I always do and will hang on to my surplus feed for next year. I run short a couple of times and had to pay the price don't enjoy that at all. Just my opinion. I never take too many extra chances and have to keep working to make ends meet but don't know no different.

This horse guy actually came along on the weekend and offered $50/bale so we jumped on it! Don't love feeding cows that much! Sold him a couple of hundred bales. Apparently the hay crop was not that peachy in west central Alberta.
