    The vet business

The other day I needed the vet to help get out a calf from a cow that had a "folded uterus". Never ran into that one before! He was telling me how things were tough in the vet business! They are advising farmers to just shoot the cow if the calf is dead inside her.
This vet is from a large practice that has three clinics and he said their preg checking last fall was down 9000 cows!
Anyway he was an excellent young fellow and he got me a live calf without going in the side! It was a struggle for sure as he had to get the uterus unfolded and use a head snare. When he was done he was literally soaked with sweat and just shaking because his arms were so tired. I guess I'll buy him a bottle besides paying his bill...he did a good job.

No doubt you vet earned his fee unless you consider the calf price at the end of the day.

My experience this year... $11.00 per head preg checking. We only did a few sale heifers and suspicious ones that we wondered about (around 35). Regardless of the mess the cattle industry is in, it seems that they still are able to build in the 'cost of living' increase.
