    Short term pain?

Without a doubt we are going to face a rocky road for the next few weeks, but in the long term this American case of BSE is a good thing for the Canadian cattle producer.
No longer are we alone in the fight to save an industry. Now suddenly we have an ally! Which just happens to be the richest most powerful country in the world! Especially in an election year in the US. I suspect Japan/Korea etc. will soon find out just how tough it is to buck the American tiger? Do you think those senators from the big cattle states might be twisting Bushes tail to get something done?
Now is the time for Canada to cozy right up to the elephant and let him crash his way through the barriers, carrying us with him? And along the way hopefully we can convince the Americans that we need to be together on this whole food safety thing? Including a North Ammerican or world standard on testing, traceback, and how we deal with diseases?
If we accomplish that we've come a long way.

i'm not sure cowman. if you read what's coming from down there they'll try to pin this one on canada and then we can write our herds down to zero. the vets from that area are quoted as saying that lots of dairy animals are imported from canada. r-calf wants the border closed to imports because they're sure this case is imported or from imported feed.

One way or another we'll be blamed for this one, even if the cow was born in Texas.

if you read r-calf's letter to veneman or go to agriculture online the americans are determined this couldn't happen without our help. does the oie get involved in the traceback procedure or is it just up to usda? it will be interesting next week when gears start turning again.

They(Denver T.V. Station) are saying it might be linked to canada.

Remember the big blackout, the first thing the americans did was try blaming Canada. The evidence proved that to be wrong so I think they should wait and see what their investigation turns up before pointing fingers. If the USDA knew that to be a fact they would have made an annoucement already.

Hmm.... I remember when we were doing the traceback on Canada's infamous cow and many Canadians were pointing south of the border as the U.S. as the possible point of origin. If I remember correctly there was only a 5% chance of that being possible.

              Interesting how quickly we forget.

On the news to night they again said that the cow's herd of origin was never found in Canada.
And yes they are trying to blame that their cow came from Canada. If it did or didn't, it really doesn't matter.
All meat is band in other countrys just the same, and it doesn't matter if we run all our cows across the boarder their isn't a sale for them any were any way. But they do have slaughter houses and we may talk them into killing some of the cattle and freezing the meat, for a later date.

Now I just assume if this was a 4000 cow dairy they would have some pretty decent records? Somehow or other they have another herd quarentined because they sold a heifer to them. If they are selling heifers I assume they wouldn't be importing cows from Canada?
I'm beginning to wonder what is with this R-calf organization? Does the "R" stand for retarded or something? We're all in this together now and calling for more border restrictions has to be the most retarded thing I've ever heard of. We need to unite as one North American voice.
This cow apparently entered the food chain. I assume her milk also entered the food chain? I think they have a more serious PR job ahead of them than we did? Trying to blame this on Canada will not make that job any easier.
