    Danger: Handle With Care

CBC had this fellow on a talk show yesterday. He probably caused more fear in the general public than any single guest or group of people since this thing broke.

This article is interesting but I believe should be read with care. I think it is riddled with overstatements, sensationalism and is totally unreferences as to sources. I did some research and many of his statements appear to be unsubstantiated. Nonetheless, this is what we have to deal with as an industry as this kind of journalism is easy to read and has enormous appeal to much of the general public.

Apocalypse Cow: U.S. Denials Deepen Mad Cow Danger
by John C. Stauber and Sheldon Rampton

For seven years the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the multi-billion dollar animal livestock industry have cooperated in a PR cover-up of huge health risks to animals and people in the United States.

For 10 years, even preceding the British outbreak of Mad Cow Disease, the USDA has had scientific evidence that a version of the disease exists in U.S. cattle. Yet government and industry have failed even at this late date to ban the practice of "cow cannibalism" which created the fatal epidemic now spreading in Britain from cows to people. The practice has been banned in Britain for years, but continues in the U.S. and is in fact more widespread here than in any other country.

You probably never heard of Mad Cow Disease until March 20, 1996, when its emergence in humans caused the unbelievable spectacle of the collapse of the British beef market and the pending extermination of millions of British cattle.......continued under link below.

I wonder how come none of us know about this "unknown version of the disease" that has been in US cattle these last ten years? Does this guy have any proof or is he just pulling up any old rumor he can find? Is this responsible journalism? Have our industry leaders challenged this allegation? And if not, why not?

Shoot, I had an unnamed Canadian Federal Vet tell me a few yrs ago that the Merkans had a cattle disease that they tentatively called "Atypical Bovine Scrapies" Sound familiar? Musta been nothing because anything by that name has disappeared.

          Later Hoss!
