This year has been a real test for the crop insurance system from AFSC. We carry moisture insurance on pasture and Barley/Moisture on our Corn. Currently our only option is to be based off of weather station data. We are right in the middle of three stations with no station really close. Because we are not really represented by other stations as we are in a bit of a microclimate we use the closest station.
This year our station got enough rain in June that we will not receive any payment, yet we received only a very small percentage of the rainfall our station got over the same time frame. Because we are far enough north we can't purchase Heat Unit insurance on our corn.
Needless to say, I am not sure that the risk management part of this program is worth our while, since it is costing me money and not managing my risk.
Any suggestions, experiences from others?
