Govmt Packing house

I just heard that Jack Horner thinks that the Govmt should build a packing house for the cull cows . Boy I am all for that if the govmt uses the $40 mill that it now gives to the lease holders of Alta. Just think we could have a plant in every town just like Mr Getty did with hospitals and it wouldnt cost one new cent of tax dollars just reassigning that $40 Mill anualy.

Atleast the lease money stays in the province. Rather scrap the gun registry and all the other ways that the feds suck money out of Alberta that never comes back. Shucks with that you could buy out the U.S. packers etc. etc. etc.

Well I don't think the government should build a packing house but Jack Horner is raising concerns that need to be addressed? Consider that we all kept the old girls home this year and the problem will only be worse this fall? We do need a plant to get these cows killed processed and marketed. And if that means canning them and donating the meat to starving nations or whatever then we need to do it. It's either that or the pit!
If the government would take the lead and encourage people to build a cow plant, instead of throwing up roadblocks, then that would be helpful? Perhaps it would be helpful if they put some restrictions on the predatory American owned packing houses, so they couldn't crush a Producer type cow plant? I think most would agree that IBP and Cargill haven't really improved the lot of the cow/calf industry in the west?

I wouldnt be to sure the money stays here a lot goes abroad in the form of holidays imported goods ect. I have no problem giving cows to those who could use them but I do have a problem wiyh throwing in a few hundred dollars to have them killed and procesed and freighted. Do you think the other players would donate thier time and money.
