    Manitoba

When the stats Canada figures came out it showed Alberta farmers lost over $200 million and Saskatchewan farmers lost over $450 million while Manitoba farmers actually made $138 million! Now why is that? What is their secret to all this prosperity? They must have either a lot smarter farmers or at least a lot smarter government? So much for the Alberta Advantage!
I guess kato has been misleading us about the hard times in Manitoba? Maybe in reality she's rolling in clover? lol

My guess would be the drought out west. The whole provinces of Sask and Ab were dried out while only portions of MB suffered.

Less drought, and more hogs that were still making a little money before the Canadian dollar strengthed. Most of our calves were sold before May 20 at fair to excellent prices (Thank you Alberta Feeders).

The hogs at least are still moving. The prices should be better, but aren't because of the Canadian $. We still have our calves from last year, but looking back to the last 8 years, we sold them in March, 5 of those years anyway.

It's a little more diversified here too. Up until last fall, there was a very large PMU business. Of course that's all down the tubes now, though.

We missed the drought from the year before, but we had no rain from the end of June until the snow came last year. There was enough moisture in the ground to carry the crop, and the dry weather made the quality high. No fusarium this year! What happens this year is anyone's guess.

There are spots in Manitoba that have had a terrible time...in the interlake region north of Winnipeg the hay was almost non-existant. People up there are having a lot of trouble. No feed, no straw, no money.

The crops in the Red River valley are usually good enough that everyone thinks the whole province had a good year, but it's actually the valley that brings up the average.
