Have a chuckle with Brian Neilsen

Let's just say for a moment that Neilsen is telling the truth???
The chuckle he had today with the guy who is sick of ranchers biting the hand that feeds them (Dave Rutherford) was sickening. Talking about freedom, democracy, and capitalism. This state of affairs is monopoly driven anarchy. Make your own policy politics.
Brian the good only laughed some more while saying they have not made any more profit than the year before. Funny how you would even bragg about that while the rest of the industry saw the biggest losses in history.

I gone to alot of auctions and at the cattle auction they have a flat rate, it should be a percentage like any other auction.

I have to think the volume at thier auction markets is at no more than 60% of normal. I expect this will give them good reason to close some of the smaller markets they have picked up to reduce competition. Wish I could make the same money on reduced volume.

Sorry guys Brian was talking about Xcel meats, their packing plant, not their Auction Markets.

I had heard last fall that they had put out the order that all kills in their packing plants had to have gone through THEIR marts, hauled on THEIR trucks (Roberge, Golden West)!

They are involved in the insurance industry and have also been pushing other bussines's out of hauling cattle by undercutting rates.

I know for awhile you had to "book" any cows going into their marts. And in fact they were just about the only ones killing cows anyway(MooseJaw). Innisfail is an idependently owned mart and hold their sale the day before Red Deer(which is a Neilson Bros mart). All the cows bought at Innisfail showed up at Red Deer the next day and they were all bought by the MooseJaw buyer.

Do Neilson's own any feed lots?

Im not sure if they own thier own feedlots or not but they do own a lot of operators that run feedlots and they own 100,000 acres or crown leases.
I think anyone feeding for them it is only a matter of time until they go under.

Who will go under? Neilsons or the feedlots?
I wonder about them sometimes... I mean make no mistake the Xcel plant was a dog...up to its butt in government debt. The MooseJaw plant was a very modern Canada Packers plant dedicated to cow kill with a processing line...I don't think they got that one cheap?
The Red Deer Mart had pretty well degenerated into one of the poorest marts, under Sask. Wheat Pool ownership, when Neilsons bought it! They brought in a new manager, skidded the old staff and turned it right around! The Manager, Mel Glencross, is very popular with the farmers as he won't let the cattle buyers steal them! If the price goes too low or they try to steal small lots he steps right up and buys them! So they must have someplace where they are feeding them? This auction mart is now one of the top ones in the province... again.

These guys are fairly well vertically integrated, both upstream and down. Meaning they are in a position to take a fee from the farm gate right to the plate. Through trucking, auction, feedlot, packer. Sounds like a monopoly in the making! Does the competition act not address this type of thing?

I had a discussion with Lee Nielson one day over the fact they wont let anyone but thier buyers buy the cheap ones he said if I thought they would let me or anyone buy cheap forget it as they are looking after thier customers so I thought how far will you go and I ran some of those calves as much as 10cents and still didnt own them but if I or someone else didnt run them they got them cheap so who were they looking after. I sugest themselves.
