I have to agree with you, nerves. We don't necessarily need a big plant but many moderate sized ones. The concept of a super big plant competing with Cargill/IBP is basically a dream. Those two know how to compete! And they don't like a lot of competition!
And actually cswilson, if it wasn't for our oil money, you not only would compete with Alberta...you would knock our socks off! Whiteface stated it very clearly: You can not raise cows at a profit on land that is worth $3000/acre(or just about any agriculture product for that matter)! And it is worth that much for one reason...oil and gas.
So perhaps you are right. Maybe we need to get out our crystal ball and realize the future of the cattle business is in Saskatchewan and Manitoba. And therefore that is where the plants should be located. I guess we'll turn Alberta into a playground for the wealthy!
I'm up real early this morning...got to be sixty miles away when the sun rises...trying to make a buck off that evil old Alberta oil!

Not eveyone from Alberta has the Texan attitude guys> I do a lot of work in both SK & MB and I admire those folks geratly a little of their grit would do some of us Txans good. The idea of a big plant in SK or MB really appeals to me for alot of reasons central location being foremost. For years our industry thought nothing of loading our cull cattle on trucks to Souix City, Omaha, or other exotic locations. If this proposedplant would start at a small kill of say 1500/day built in a modular design in order to expand if neccesary, build it state of the art , complete with biodigesters to help create energy for operation, include labs to test for export markets that so desire, build it along with facilties to produce value added beef products. Dare to dream if you will I really think it could be a part of the solution in the future. And the good news is it would be Canadian owned!!! with the plus of cenral location to serve Western Ontario, and the four Western Provinces.
