Finally I'm seeing my cows grazing in muddy conditions again. We've had 2 1/2 inches here in July after missing many of the showers others got through June. What a relief to get back into a better supply of moisture. I hope everyone else is getting plenty too - it would give us all a better chance of weathering the BSE crisis. Now if only the mould would start growing on the hoppers!

Here in Manitoba I can't keep up to the grass.I have already hayed some pasture and the cattle are leaving the padocks with more grass on them than I started grazing them on last year. It's a problem that puts a smile on my face!

We have super pastures too, and so far the grasshoppers appear to have drowned.
The corn, however is not too happy. On warm days you can practically see it grow, then it cools off again, and it starts working for the government. (AKA does nothing!).
Won't complain too much though, especially after the shakey start we had with all the May blizzards!

My first cut alfalfa has had 3 ( yes THREE! ) inches on it over the course of just over a week. I would so rather complain about my hay having been rained on than not having a second cut. We're seriously wondering if there may even be the possibelity of 3 cuts as the grass in the hay field is now higher than the swaths. Could just about cut it again after (hopefully) picking up the stuff laying on the ground. My grandpa always said not to sweat a little rain, the hay will still make feed especially if it's "just for beef cattle." (He had dairy cows). 3 inches though, I ran into that problem once or twice living on the west coast but here in Alberta! Never rains here! Any of you guys have any experience with rained on alfalfa? That much rain? How does the hay turn out? Feed quality? Should I test it or just bed them with it? Glad everyones getting rain. Not a grasshopper anywhere around here and I sure have grass, especially on the hay fields. If I don't get it picked up the cattle just may be swath grazing all winter. Who knows.

Bombay, it's too bad we couldn't send some where it is needed. Even with all the rain that we've gotten here in Central Alberta, it sounds like it is hit and miss because there are producers around Olds who say that they need it badly as most of what the rest of us have gotten has missed them.
I for one am not going to say we've had enough - far from it. We need so much to bring us back up to a decent water table. We'll definitely take what we've got and it's nice to see the pastures coming so well. In my area, at least for now, the grasshoppers seem to have been stopped by the cold and the wet - thank goodness for that.
Here's hoping and fingers crossed that you get some of what is supposed to be coming in the next few days.
