While ranchers are trying to work out whether the calf setaside program is worth participating in it's nice to see that one group is assured of a good result from the program. That would be CFIA ... according to the WP today out of the $66 million pledged to increase slaughter capacity $28 million will go to CFIA. To "speed up the approval process for proposed new Federally inspected slaughter plants and eventually hiring more inspectors to handle the increased workload"
Given the way CFIA has acted in the last year and their feet dragging on approving the Salmon Arm cow plant, for one, a letter of reprimand may have been more in order - and a damn sight cheaper!
