USDA says Canadian cattle pose 'minimal risk'
    CTV.ca News Staff

The U.S. border could open up to live Canadian cattle under 30 months of age within a couple of months, thanks to a new classification system for countries that are considered "minimal risk regions" for mad cow disease.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture made the announcement Wednesday afternoon.

Canada will be the first country recognized as a minimal-risk region. The new rules take effect March 7.

"We are committed to ensuring that our regulatory approach keeps pace with the body of scientific knowledge about BSE," said Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman.

"After conducting an extensive review, we are confident that imports of certain commodities from regions of minimal risk can occur with virtually no risk to human or animal health. Our approach is consistent with guidelines established by the World Organization for Animal Health, or OIE, and relies on appropriate, science- based risk mitigation measures."

Canadian beef producers estimate they've lost more than $4 billion since a BSE-infected cow was found in Alberta back in May 2003.

That prompted the U.S. ban all imports of Canadian beef products. While exports of beef from younger cattle have since resumed, live cattle and meat from older animals remain shut out.

Ya know what really irks me? This attitude that even OUR media has adopted that the USA is some type of governing body on Animal Health, Human Health, Free Trade, etc. What happened to the UN, WTO, etc.? They make recommendations and the world listens; all except the US. They just do whatever the Hell they want! It's like the bully on the playground.
We had a bully on the school bus when I was growing up. He'd push me and everyone else around, punch ya, take your lunch, typical crap. Then one day while he was giving me a taste of the floor on the bus, I swung blind, lucked out and broke his nose. Ever since we've been pretty good friends.
It taught me that people respect you more when you stand up for yourself. One day, I really hope we see a someone or something in this country with the will to see things done right. To see us stand up for ourselves instead of being used at will by the Americans.

Live cattle under 30 mos. will begin crossing the border by March 7th according to a news bulletin on CFCW at 2:00 this afternoon. Interestingly our MLA was quoted in his year end interview in our local paper, saying he was confident that live cattle would commence moving in March !!!! His interview took place last week !!!
