It's enough to gag a horse to listen to these guys on the U.S. panel that are coming up to check out our industry. These guys are coming up here because they have concerns about OUR feeding practices? I heard one of the reps this morning and he said so much stuff that was just plain wrong it made me want to turn off the radio. He thinks it raises a red flag because we've had four cases of BSE and the U.S. has had none, he thinks ranchers feeding practices in Canada are poor, our ruminant ban is not enforced and we're not testing enough cattle. I don't know how reps from the U.S. can say these things without their tongues falling off. If anything the standards down there are lower than ours, their mills have been shown to not enforce many if any regulations and there's a strong probability that they've covered up their cases of BSE (that's why they haven't found any?)Presumably the guys on the panel know all this too so I guess they're just plain deceitful.
In any event how anyone can think they don't have BSE and we're just riddled with it when the border was open for many, many cows for many, many years is beyond me. It surpasses all understanding.
I'm in favor of the border opening because I think it will help our prices and help many of my neighbours who are struggling right now. At least short term. But it sure is hard to swallow some of the absolute nonsense coming out of the Americans. And then they have to rub our noses in it by sending a panel to check out OUR industry? Geez.
