    RFID tags made in ?

The six approved electronic tags are:
Allflex FDX : Kane Vet Supply, Edmonton AB
Allflex HDX : both Allflex tags reference www.allflex"usa".com

Destron Fearing etag FDX : "Saint Paul Minnesota

Nedap D40 Cattle Tag : Sherwood Park, Alberta

Reyflex : Ketchum Manufacturing, Ottawa Ontario

Y-Tex TechStar II tag FDX : Cody Wyoming

Which tags are actually made in Canada? It is not clear to me when viewing their web sites. Seems odd that we support the USA companies when implementing our Canadian ID system.

Anybody know and care to offer any thoughts?

I believe Ketchum's are made right in Ottawa. They manufacture them themselves.

I haven't bought mine yet but I promise you all that if they can be bought "made in Canada," those are the ones I will buy. No way am I looking to support more of their "We found another BSE cow from Canada" song traced back by one of THEIR tags.
I have tons of products that have "product of USA" labels on them, what is all the chirping they're doing about not haveing country of origin. I'm all for country of origin, I want it for us too, including tags, this is OUR traceback system is it not?
Can't wait for "BSE tested, product of Canada" to show up in American supermarkets along side "product of USA" and laugh all the way when the consumer picks up, barley fed, tendar, (percieved) safer Canadian product before thier own after all thier demands for needing COOL to survive and it backfires on them. But then, a lot of people really don't think that far ahead do they?
Who knows, maybe I shouldn't either, not like it will be my decision to make. Have a good day all!

This is a minor distraction surely? Allflex are an Australian company originally and I always though Ketchum were British? Is this any different from any of our other imports? How many of you run a Canadian tractor or a Canuck truck?

good on you grassfarmer. We can be as CANADIAN as we want to but it isn't too likely that we can get through one day without utilizing something that came from the US....
I don't really care where the damn tags are manufactured. I buy from my local farm supply store and he makes a few cents . My main concern with the tags is that the darn things stay in the ears !
It is pouring like crazy here tonight so tomorrow when I skid and slide into town I'll check out the eartags at both the farm store and the vets.
Then I'll stop at the hardware and load up the back of the pickup with de-icer which may have been made in the US....but I don't care about that either as long as it saves me from breaking my neck out doing chores !!!
Seriously, I know that this entire US finger pointing stuff is giving everyone heartburn but boycotting everything that is manufactured in the US isn't going to be possible, so we may as well turn our energies to something productive, like getting the year end books done and getting ready for calving !!!

I didn't mean to raise any hackles. I just thought it odd that the Canadian ID system uses some US made tags - more so because they are far from a national ID program themselves. I realize that there are US value-added programs that implement ID tags.

My post resulted from a hunt for an approved tag which was an RFID dangle - space for personnal ID to be added. Also was looking for the "stayability" success of one company's tag over another.

We've recorded DOB (on paper) and have tagged the calf with its mothers's # since the late 70's. We use the angus green tags, bar-coded dangle for this, as well as the little steel numbered tags. We would like to not have to triple tag over 300 head of squirmy black calves in open range conditions.
We also run a registered herd so we need a spot to tattoo also. The registered cattle will have more body piercing and ear jewellery than I. Tattoo, RFID, steel tag, and dangle ID (until we run out of the bar-coded dangle tags).

I don't know if we will be buying Canadian made or not - we live an hour away from the closest tag supplier or we'll use mail order, wherever we find what we need.

Geez emerald1, did you have to remind me of the yearend books!!! And we're already into calving and putting together bull sale information which will happen in the window between the registered and commercial herds calving.
Thank goodness our son 'has a life' and our daughter comes home from the city or our cupboards would be bare. The last time I went to town was for the New Year's Eve Dance ... pretty pathetic eh? I'd like to think we make a conscientous effort to buy Canadian but like you folks have said it is pretty hard to get by without using a foreign made product. On that note I would like to add that we will not be using any AI sires owned by R-calfer members which is taking time and adding to my paper and phone pile.

Hope everyone is enjoying the nice weather. We hit the mid 40's today.

Inahurry, at least you WENT to the New Years Dance !!! I do plenty of travelling off the farm but after icy rain and glare icy on the roads and around the yard, I am going to spend the day going through last years pile of bills ready to start year end books !!! I hate that job too, but it is easier to do before calving vs trying to work with numbers after being up all night !!
