and of course gov. schweitzer was quoted earlier this week on cbc radio as saying if the fire season was bad down there as it's shaping up right now montana's 'friends' to the north could be counted on to help out his great state. maybe he's thinking of alaska. lol.

Actually, I would hope and expect if Montana or the northern states did have a problem as they have in years past that Canada would be the first to send people and equipment to assist.

I do not think Canada needs to retaliate against the U.S. for keeping the border closed. Either way we are winners, open the border and our live prices will improve immediately. Keep the border closed and Canada will ramp up its packer capacity and we will be ahead in the longer term as there will be a shift in packing capacity from the NW U.S. to Alberta and Canada.

The balance has turned and it is now the U.S that is the looser as this situation continues to unfold. International beef trade with the U.S. is on hold until the U.S. normalizes trade with Canada not to mention that a number of U.S. packers are on the verge of shutting down permanently and the U.S. is at risk of destroying its NW packing industry. U.S. consumer confidence in beef is being eroded by R-Calf's successful injunction and other irresponsible behaviours while at the same time Canadian per capita beef consumption is increasing. World confidence in U.S. beef is now being quesitoned as the U.S. obviously is hiding the fact that they have BSE too.

While the continued delays in seeing normal trade resume is discouraging, it is hurting the U.S. a lot more than it is hurting Canada as we have made adjustments and will be stronger when it all comes out in the wash. I think Canadian producers are gaining a quiet confidence that we are going to come through this either way.
