Isnt there a law in Canada like there is in the states about having and abusing a monopoly? Now I know there are 2 big competitors, not just one, but they act the same way and are both from another country. Shouldn't that somehow be illegal?

Why yes, it should be illegal. And the law is called the Competion Act. Unfortunately it is seldom enforced.

Speaking of which I'm surprised no one has mentioned Cargills purchase of Guelph Ontario's Better Beef Ltd. Which I should have thought would generate some discussion, now they're using our money(some more) to futher tighten their deathgrip around our throats.
Good positioning on their parts if these other plants get up and running they are positioning themselves to profit from them as well.

The U.S. has always had much tougher anti-combines legislation than Canada. Dianne Fransis wrote a book (I forget the name)along time ago showing comparisons between the two countries in this regard.
The U.S. companies are here because of two reasons. The low dollar these past 30 years has made it attractive to buy up Canadian industry, and the lack of any significant regulation, inhibiting the evolution of enteprize... morphing into monopoly.
We in western Canada have not been protected by succesive Liberal governments on one hand pretending to dislike Americans, but on the other letting them operate here in a manner they are not allowed to in the U.S.
We have been conned!!
