I would hate to see our province try and go it alone. However, I do think that Confederation as it was supposed to be is not working, and unless there is a huge change in the federal government soon, the fires of western separation will flare up. I don't think for one minute that Martin and his crew see us as anything but a cash cow, but you can bet your boots he'll be front and centre here next week strutting around like a peacock during the Queen's visit.

Kato: I agree with your comments. The remarks made about Stronach would not have been said if she was male. The Martin government needs to look beyond this defeat to the next election and win over that portion of the electorate who mistrusted Martin and his people last time around.
Perhaps the most damaging aspect of the Stronach move to the Liberals was that the Conservatives lost a young moderate female business woman from Ontario. Now the image of the party becomes more hard line, red neck and dare I say it, uncaring. The actions of the Conservatives in the last few days does nothing to dispell that perception.

Oops...I meant to say that Stephen Harper and the Conservatives need to look beyond this defeat....

farmers_son, why in the world would you think that the loss of Belinda is damaging to the Conservative party.
I think she has been angling for this ever since she didn't get the leadership. She got elected under the Conservative banner, paid lip service to supporting all their concerns with the corruptness of the Liberals, but likely was looking for a way to climb the ladder all along. Peter MacKay did indicate that she had spoken to Martin several weeks ago.....
I don't call it a loss I call it good riddance !! Same as losing any fair weather friend !

Well, we will see this afternoon if Belinda damaged the Conservatives ill advised drive to force an election in June.
I think there is no doubt that Stronach's move damaged the Conservatives big time. The voters will remember the sexist comments made, the way that Harper was out maneuvered by the Liberal team. The Conservatives had an image problem before, it has gotten worse. Harper has handled a lot of things badly and failed his first real test as Opposition Leader.
A lot of female voters will remember what was said whether the election is this June or next December.

How ironic, the voters will remember sexist comments of backbench MPs and MLAs in Provincial governments he's not even responsible for. And then they'll very conveniently forget Billions of misplaced and stolen taxpayers money.
Have we ever got our collective priorities messed up. Is there any hope for this country? This is not the way I remember how this country used to be run. Cabinet ministers used to resign over what we would today probably consider trivial matters that happened under their watch. Now, you just have an inquiry, and then talk about how you're doing something about the problem, all the while counting on the public to lose interest long before the inquiry ever concludes. Paul Martin was the finance minister and he knew nothing about billions of mispent tax dollars?!?! No resignation, no shame, no honor. Canada is quickly becoming a banana republic. Whens the next coup?, maybe its a good thing we've gutted the military.

The female voters that I know are disgusted with Belinda, they feel as I do that if she wanted to cross the floor she could have done it a month ago vs on the eve of today's vote.
Women that I know that keep in touch with politics are as fed up as I am with corruption and turncoat politicians.

Billions FARMRANGER?? The gun resitry is almost 2 billion, but we are aware of it. The scandal was approximately $170 million. I am not defending anybody, but just don't like to see things get over exhagerated, as most things do in politics. One bad policy move can cost way more than $170 million. The problem is the ethics and corruption of those involved.
I am sick of everything that is going on in Ottawa, but I do not want another election to vote in another minority!! They are wasting our money right now as nothing gets done in Ottawa, yet they still all collect their paychecks, while the country sits completely idle.
A snap election will just bring more of the same. These people in Ottawa, need to grow up, and put the country first!! We need to see what these people are made of, so we can have some real information to base our next vote on! I can't say there is anyone in Ottawa I want to vote for at the moment. There may never be though, but we need someone who can show some promise.

Thanks Cattleman, I think I need an editor. I should have said 170 million stolen, and billions mispent perhaps. If you remember, there was something like 2 billion unaccounted for in the HRDC scandal that could be included in that billions figure. That could have been partially stolen as well, maybe we'll never know since there was never a proper accounting for that money.
I am thinking that running around Canada buying votes like a kid with a fist full of money in a candy store, (with taxpayers money) is misspending as well. Thanks for straightening me out though, all that money was not proven to be not stolen, but it would sure be nice to know where it did go.
