Rain Amounts

I'm kind of curious to know how much rain different areas got and if the rains finally made it to areas that really needed it.

Here in the Spruce View area we have gotten 90 mm (3.5 inches) since Friday afternoon at about 3:00. There is some puddling in the pastures but not as much as I thought there would be. The heavy rainfall advisory is now off for our area but apparently is still on for the Rocky area. There is also a flood warning for upstream of the *****on Dam on the Red Deer and Little Red Deer Rivers.

Just moved up over 3 inches at Crossfield since Friday and still comin.
We are over 9 inches in June so far.

I actually spoke too soon. The rain quit for about 45 minutes and now it has started up again. We were down signficantly in terms of precipitation so this is welcome. Once the sun comes out and the grass starts to grow in earnest, then the smiles will be forthcoming.

Between Vulcan and Nanton we have had about 8 tenths through Friday and into Saturday morning. In the range of 8 inches in June. Have a good day. tirwin.

Had 2.75 inch at Rimbey since last evening but it's getting lighter now. Close to 5 inches in June after close to 3 inches in May. Tough job trying to keep up to the grass growth - I need more cows! Kinda nervous buying any this side of July though.

You can "rent" mine grassfarmer! Here's a deal! You take the cows in exchange for the manuare they'll leave you to fertilize your fields. I won't even charge the current rate of most "organic" fertilizers. Almost FREE as they say in Mexico! I'll even take them back if/when you run low on the pasture and you keep the manuare! Are you in?!

Here west of Leduc we have had about an inch of rain since Thursday afternoon. As I indicated in another post I just drove through Sundre and it is just a disaster. Water, trees, etc. running down the streets. I plowed water and didn't know if I was going to stay on the highway or get swept away ! Just as I was driving up the hill past the James River the highway contractor was putting the barricades up closing the highway south.
Black Diamond was bracing for the worst when I drove through there and Highway 22 was washed out north of Turner Valley forcing a detour back on highway 7 to get over to Highway 2.
Highway 1 to Banff was closed and the traffic was lined up for miles, while being rerouted back through Cochrane via highway 1A.
All in all, its not a good day to be out and about in much of the province and there is certainly a lot of devastation, on top of what many communities received last week.

Good lord Whitey, 11 inches. That big sandhill of yours sits right over Bejing, China does it not. Any more and your gonna get those little fellows wet.

Looks like we're gonna top of at just under 4 inches here Crossfield since yesterday morning.

Sump pump started up in the basement for the first time since we lived here (3 years).

Pretty hard to find a lot negative to say about this situation except maybe the distruction in high population areas like emerald spoke of.

There are going to be lakes in southern Alberta where lakes have been lost for years. Subsoil moisture will not only guarantee a crop this year but will help for a year or so down the line.

OK Whiteface, you got a deal. But i'll have to charge $1 per cow for the priviledge of accompanying a Luing bull - you don't want any open cows coming home. It's the only place in North America where they could have such illustrious company and for only $1/day! I might need to charge an extra management fee of 10 cents a day if they prove as contrary as my only straight hereford. Move 100 cows and calves out of a field and 98 go one way and that clown and her calf go the other direction!
Seriously though this rain is a welcome boost to a lot of farmers, I assume even in that Airdrie/Irricana belt they got plenty?

Relax grassfarmer, Whitey's cows are pretty darn quiet. She plays with them like dolls you know. I will sign the lease agreement contract as a witness for you guys, and may even bid on the resulting calves for our Celtic program. I'll have to inspect the calves of course, and only those that can dance with a high step or play the pipes will qualify you know.

Talked to several ranchers from Pincher Creek last night and they don't think they will be able to get on the land for a couple of weeks to silage...some of them don't have their cattle out to pasture yet, first it was too dry, no grass, and then too wet to get the liners into the yard !!
Randy, glad your sump pump is working and you aren't filling sand bags !

randy, my limos can dance pretty high and wide at times, in fact, I am sure that I have seen some of them do the 'Highland Fling' on occasion !!!
I am half scotch, ( actually today, had I been a drinking woman, I would have polished off a quart of the stuff after I got through Sundre ), and half Irish that should qualify me as Celtic.

There are a lot of areas that have been hard hit and I hope that it doesn't take them long to recover. Glad to hear you got home through Sundre emrald, Bearberry is supposed to be just awful.

I was also told that they let some of the water out of the *****on dam today to try and alleviate some of what will be coming. It is still coming down pretty good here - we're now up to almost 4.5 inches since yesterday afternoon.

I wonder if we're getting it all now and will see some of July and August relatively dry, which has happened in a good number of years around here.

Still, it is good to know that recharging of groundwater will be taking place and surface areas that have been dry or nearly dry will now be recharged as well.

That's a pretty good offer grassfarmer. Adding the value of black to my whiteface cows I mean...and the bonus of finally seeing Randy again to get a bid for the resulting calves....

Praise that sandhill of mine, all the cows have stayed right there for the last two days, she's sure wet down in the low land.

Black? who said anything about black? I haven't got a black cow on the place! Maybe I'm just out of fashion - or maybe I'm one of the pioneers of the next fashion - red cattle.
