U.S. Treasury Secretary expects border to re-open to Canadian cattle

CALGARY (CP) - The U.S. government expects to be successful next week in overturning a lower court ruling that has delayed its plans to reopen the border to live Canadian cattle.
U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow said Saturday that the four month-old injunction preventing the border from reopening was "ill considered" and not based on scientific facts.

"We're pressing hard, the Justice Department is appealing that injunction seeking to get that injunction removed, and I trust that we'll be successful in those efforts," Snow said in Calgary at the end of two days of bilateral trade talks between top finance officials in Canada and the U.S.

The appeal is slated for July 13 in Seattle and will be followed "very, very closely" by the Canadian government, federal Finance Minister Ralph Goodale said Saturday.

It'll be lucky for us, because we're going to go and see Willie Nelson! Now,if we heard some good news on the way home, that would be a perfect day.

On second thought though, a perfect day would be one with no rain.

      The rest is just gravy.

Okay...so what happens if the appeal court tosses out the R-CALF victory? Does Cebul still go ahead with the trial...or is that all she wrote?
If he can still go ahead with the trial on July 27, can he reclose the border? Will we have to go through another lengthy appeal process?

If USDA wins on Wednesday, the July 27th case still goes ahead regardless. If Cebull orders the border shut again, there is talk in the US government that they will put a stay on the ruling.

The fact that neither ABP or CAA have been granted intervenor status is really a concern.
