    cais

... has anyone else been receiving cheques from the cais program... they sent a revised 03 and 04 statements in the past two weeks that have added up to quite a few dollars ... guess the govt is wanting me to spend some money before year end...

We never applied. My opinion is that it's a flawed B.S. program, and I want nothin' to do with it. If I need subsidy, I'll take it out of my paycheck. Even when I'm at the point where I'm home ranching fulltime - hopefully in the near future - if things get bad, I won't be looking for a friggin handout!! I'll go back to the workforce for a while and take care of my own.

If I'm to rely on government to help me out, I'm lost.

Flawed BS program... certainly. One example of CAIS’s flaws is that payments for 03 and 04 have not arrived and it is only days from 2006. Myself I am still waiting for money from 2003.

Purecountry: Perhaps your operation is small enough you can subsidize your farm with a paycheque. Lots of producers do. However you simply cannot afford not to participate in CAIS.

File you CAIS application and put the payment into a RRSP which will reduce your income taxes if you are uncomfortable with government support being part of your farms cash flows. That would be like giving the government a rude gesture with one finger raised.

Taking government money and using it to reduce your income taxes, it doesn't get better than that.

I doubt CAIS will last much longer...none of these programs do?
NISA was a pretty good program in my mind but the government didn't seem to like the fact someone was making money at it! Usually when they scrap one program they try to come up with one that is more complex so they can give their political hacks more jobs and keep the accounting businesses happy?
Flipping these programs every few years allows the beuracracy opportunities to grow and expand at great expense to the taxpayer...only in Canada!

Purecountry: Don't be afraid to take the governments money...because if you don't they will just find someone else who will! Probably some French speaking type with an ad agency or something!
I believe it is our duty to give Ottawa as little money as we possibly can...that way they don't have cash to promote their more evil ideas!

FS, I like your idea. Not bad at all.

Participating in their socialist programs just encourages them to make more socialist programs.

I realize if one is in hock to the bank it may be required. But if one is really a free enterpriser those types of things needn't be counted on.

I don't think it's a sin to take welfare, it's just a sin to stay on it. And these types of programs are definitely welfare.

Of course those who believe in a nanny state would disagree.

I do think that some of these programs are necessary vs being welfare, as we do need to put our producers on a level playing field with producers in highly subsidized countries.

So, it's okay to force some janitor making $10.00 an hr, or some single mother working two jobs to feed her kids, to pay you to keep your business going?

I would doubt that those lower income families actually pay income tax.
I will ask you a question, do you think that we all have an obligation to pay taxes to help seniors, social programs etc. or is it your view that everybody, farmers included should just sink or swim regardless of what unfortunate circumstances they have been faced with ?

I feel that we all have an obligation to see that nobody falls through the crack in society if they are trying to make a good life for themselves. I do think that we need to re-evaluate all social programs that are basically hand outs to drug addicts, criminals etc.

Lower income families don't pay tax of any kind? First I heard of it.

You're trying to compare your business, I assume in existence to make a profit, to senior citizens just trying to keep a roof over their head.

If you're unable to work, like many senior citizens, why are you trying to farm? It's much cheaper to feed you personally than feed you <b>and</b> your business.

You still haven't answered the question. Why do you feel it's okay to extort money from janitors making $10.00/hr, and single mothers working two jobs to feed their kids, to keep your business going?

I can assure you that the pittance I have received in the way of federal assistance in my agricultural operation wouldn't keep my cats in catfood for very long.

Everyone in this country that likes to eat the cheap food that it produced by farmers has a vested interest in keeping the industry viable.

What do you supposed will happen in this country if more and more producers leave the industry, sell to large corporations that can lobby governments for huge subsidies or can price fix so everyone, including those on lower and fixed incomes have no choice but to pay .
There needs to be a program in place to do what CAIS was supposed to do, and there also needs to be a good diaster program in place for years when there is drought, floods, and God help us BSE ! I don't think that many people begrudged the livestock producers the help they received during the drought and the BSE crisis, in fact, the $10.00 an hour waitress, and the single mom, were likely the first in line to offer their help or volunteer to work at a Beef BBQ in their community...because they realized the importance of the industry, and also realized that farmers are no welfare cases !!!

...emrald brought up the most important point and that is the cheap food policies of our government...i see your point but you tell me one other industry that is not subsidized by government somewhere along the line and i would say your full of crap...and by the way emrald1 is right if those peoples income is below a certain level the tax they pay would be reimbursted after filing for their income tax...

The Liberal culture of entitlement has really taken root. I notice there's no call to subsidize waitresses and janitors.

Where would we be without a cheap waitress and janitor policy? </sarcasm>

Saw this comment on a blog. Somehow I thought it fit.

"The ideal life of a Layton-Martin-Duceppe Canadian: survive abortion, cash government cheques, become swinger, kill self. Or something like that."
