Has anyone heard what the cost of custom grazing of cows or yearlings is this year?

In my area nothing much has changed. Some ask for more but bottom line is basically $30 month for a cow/calf and if you don't like that price there are a dozen guys at the gate waiting to rent it!
A local, who got sick of losing money raising calves, sold his cows last fall for $1100 each with a three year deal to pasture at $125/season/cow. Which was probably a fairly decent deal all around? In reality he sold the cows for $1025 by lowering the rent and got a deal where he has a secured renter for three years? The buyer was a longtime neighbor so shouldn't be any surprizes?
I think the biggest nightmare for any farmer renting pasture is you might just get some fly by night type who shafts you! There are a lot of them out there! I think you have to ask yourself why someone from 50 miles away is wanting to rent your pasture? Quite often it is because he screwed all the guys close to him! Sometimes it is better to take a little less and know you are going to get paid rather than go for the big bucks and get nothing?
I would sure check out anyone who wants to rent pasture. These big wheeler dealer cattlemen often don't have a pot to piss in or a window to throw it out of!

good advice cowman. In this area there are lots of landowners that custom pasture cattle, and more than one of them has been shafted by cowboys that talked a great line. Always good to know your customer and ask for at least a couple of months rent in advance and a written agreement of when rent is due, and what you are expected to supply.

Yeah and for every plough jockey turned grazer that got shafted there a rancher who got a raw deal. Only takes one set of yearlings that didn't gain, one set of heifers that you find Charolais bulls running in, one pasture running out of water etc to kind of sour you on renting pasture too. There's not alot of guys out there that have the expertise to do a good job grazing somebody elses cattle-the ones that do are worth the money-the ones that don't well aren't worth much. It's just like anything else-both sides of the deal had better be right. Takes more to be a custom grazer than some grass and a three wire fence.

Well said cswilson.
In our area, $30/month or $1/day is standard on pairs. 75 cents/day on yearlings.
Of course, some Germans get breaks or swindle deals to cover their gym dues and such.

Cswilson: I suppose you might be right. I think the people who actually do custom grazing probably do a good job if they are in it long enough? I know there is one family east of Red Deer who got out of cow/calf and went to straight custom grazing yearlings and they seem to think it works pretty good.
Was actually talking to a guy about a week ago who told me the best deal he ever got was when the oil company left the gate open and the neighbors cattle got into his canola! He was on his way home from a little run away at the Legion so just left them in until the next day when he was feeling more perky! He phoned the oil company and gave them hell and sent them a bill that would have made Rockefeller blush! He said they paid right up and he still combined 30 bu/acre that fall! He said since then he has often considered going over and opening the gate again but not sure how many times he might be able to play that game!LOL

There's no supposing about it-most guys who are good at managing cows and grass are doing so with their own grass and cattle. there's been some horriffic wrecks up in our neck of the woods-there's a;lmost two generations of farmers now that have never had anything to do with cattle. Not sure a winter grazing seminar and renting a post pounder are going to change that. There are some real good graziers up her but they are usually booked solid-pretty hard to outbid the guys from out west that are ranching with Ralph's cheque book lol.
