    Chelated Minerals?

I am interested in chelated loose minerals. I talked to tree feed companies. One says they have been around for years but won't touch this market because no one shows will minerals are chelated and at what percent. The two other companies sell chelated minerals but won't tell me how much of the minerals are chelated. I know copper is on element they say should be chelate.

    What are you guys hearing?

    Thanks

Don't know too much on the topic so did a quick Google on it. It seems to be a more natural product that can improve conception etc ... at a price. We are back to using kelp as our sole mineral source for the cows. Conventional wisdom often says using something like this is unnecessary and expensive and inorganic products will do just as well. It all depends what suits your system - we noticed the year we used kelp all summer that we didn't have a single case of pink eye or lameness and it seemed to help conception. We have now settled on a system that seems to work for us - when the cows go onto banked grass a few weeks before calving we put them on kelp. They remain on this until the bulls are pulled in the fall when we switch them onto a conventional mineral. Basically at the time of lowest feed requirement (late fall) and over winter when we are feeding forages grown on intensively farmed land we use the cheaper inorganic product. At pasture when the cows needs are greatest they are on kelp. I saw one website that suggested a similar system with chelated minerals.
What is the cost of the chelated mineral? We find that a 50:50 kelp/salt mixture runs about 10 cents a day.

I have had my herd on a chelated mineral for 16 years. It improved the fertility in the cattle, mainly because my well water is high in sodium which ties up the essential minerals, which was causing a problem in the cattle particularly the young stock.

I use a mineral containing chelates that is marketted by Co-op feeds. I used to use a product produced by Sureleen Albion and was imported into Canada for several years. The product was a liquid chelate that could be added to drinking water or colostrum for that matter to get the mineral into the animals blood stream much faster than conventional minerals.

I mix the Co-op mineral 50/50 with loose blue salt and feed it free choice.
