grassfarmer: I agree that both Cargill and Tyson got a sweetheart deal that wasn't offered to the domestic packers! In part it forced Canada Packers and Burns to fold! Again the government picking winners and losers?
I am actually glad that the government didn't put a lot of money into "producer owned" plants? For one reason...they wouldn't have worked. I truly don't think anyone can compete with the Cargills of this world...and why throw good money after bad?
The fact is Cargill is very good at what they do and without a different set of rules would run out a rooky competitor with no problem? It really is a tough and dirty business and "producer plants" have a poor track record? The Fletchers hog plant would be a good example?
