John Prentice a true Canadian Cattleman

John is a prime example of how foresight and practicality can create profit from agriculture. Profit is not and should not be a dirty word, and John's amazing contribution to a Canadian institute should show us all how greed does not have to be the ultimate goal of profit.

Although some of our ideas differed at various ABP meetings, I always came away from conversations with John with a feeling of respect. I still believe that even those who choose to live lives in a less agressive nature deserve profit for their hard work, and some of the rules that lean toward mutinational control detract from that potential. Profit can be made within the system as John has shown us, but I believe that their is more potential profit and more potential stay at home Canadian money if we would not continue to cater to Cargill and Tyson as an industry at every step.

There was and still is opportunity in this wonderful industry we call our own, and stories like John's give me reason to carry on; not just for another day but for my lifetime.

Well than grassfarmer - have you ever heard the last name Hogg in your land of thrift. That's right young man - my grandad's name on my mommies side. You don't think I sit beside you at meetings because I agree with your ideas now do you? Even had a few red hairs in my beard when I grew it out.

I agreed with Mr Prentice on one occasion when we concurred that we were both your typical,well balanced Scots - equal sized chips on both shoulders!

On another topic are you heading to the Rimbey bull and heifer show with animals? Have you found it a good promotional event or just a place to hang out for wannabe showmen?

rkaiser, I'm glad you started this thread. I was thinking on the weekend that I should post something about John and his tremendous contribution to the university.

I had several business dealings--not directly related to agriculture--with John several years ago. We had long conversations about the state of ag, politics and economics in the world and current events. His views were always fresh, well-reasoned and thought-provoking. To be brief, he was one of the smartest people I met in a business sector that was made up of smart guys. It does not surprise me that he would do something unique with his money.
