Bull Test Stations

I raise Angus and Gelbvieh cattle and am looking to perhaps place some of the bulls on test for this winter. Can anybody give me some names and locations for test stations in western Canada? Thanks a lot!!!

It depends a lot on where you are. In MB there are test stations at Gunton (204)467-2527, Douglas (204)763-4696, and there is also a Yellowhead station. I do not have the number for that one, but the others can tell you. I think the one up by Roblin is closed.

In Ontario the test stations are pretty well all run by Beef Improvement Ontario. www.biobeef.com

I am not aware of any test stations still being run in SK.

In AB there is the Lakeland college station in Vermilion (780)853-8595 and Little Red Feeders at Innisfail (403)227-2511. I believe that Cattleland at Strathmore also operates tests (403)934-4030

Little Red Feeders runs an excellent bull test station at Innisfail Alberta. It is a common sense program with a silage based ration. They have a bull sale at Olds Alberta in the spring. Don and Carol Curtice own and operate it and are really good people.

Hi Muttley!

I've sent you an e-mail but will also mention that when the Gelbvieh breed used Little Red Feeders and had over 70 Gelbvieh bulls on test in 1989 we purchased Goldrush from that Gelbvieh Bull Sale. Feeding for longevity is no doubt one of their specialties since he is now over 13 and still breeding. They no longer feed out many Gelbvieh bulls, but if they have an All-Breed Bull Sale
it may be worth your while. Lakeland did have Gelbvieh bulls on test but likewise they haven't had any for a while. Most of the Gelbvieh breeders have grouped together to have their own private sales unfortunately. Have you checked into the Canadian Bull Display Centre situated outside of Regina? A few years ago it looked extremely promising for displaying a top of line young bull for national and international exposure.
