I have really been thinking about this
ALMA program of late (still no second
cheque) and my understanding of the
intent of the program vs. the results of
the program.
In thinking about this I have come to a
couple of different ideas about what
would be an actual useful
service/program to help reduce risk for
producers and enhance profitability.
1. offer easily accessible contracts to
hedge the Canadian dollar through AFSC.
This would immediately remove a huge
level of risk for the general cow/calf
operator who wishes to remain in the
mainstream marketing.
2. work with other provinces to
streamline interprovincial meat
inspection and transport of product.
This would immediately improve the
ability of producers to develop and
access local and domestic markets with
value added products.
3. work with the Canadian government and
other provinces to overhaul CFIA,
streamline regulations and provide
affordable certification for various
practices. This would be done with the
idea that certification would be
acceptable for trade outside of NA and
would be available for interested
parties.
4. invest in research (basic and trade
research)
I am sure I have a longer list but these
4. come to mind first.
