Thinking about ALMA (no second cheque
yet) and I have a few ideas for things
that would be of actual value to
producers.
1. easily available contracts to hedge
the dollar offered through AFSC. This
instantly reduces risk for cow/calf
producers who choose to sell into the
mainstream market.
2. streamline/remove interprovincial
trade barriers to encourage
local/domestic value added. this would
empower smaller abbatoirs and producers
to grow niche markets in Canada.
3. work with provincial and federal
governments to streamline regulations
(and eliminate stupid ones) and reform
CFIA.
4. invest in basic production, product
development and trade research.
5. work with other governments to
develop real, affordable, useful
certifications such as organic or
hormone free that can be used to access
additional markets.
6. develop a pilot slaughter plant
(federally inspected) that can be used
for value chain development with an
export focus. With interprovincial
streamlining we have enough
capacity/competition for domestic market
development already.
7. work with federal and provincial
governments to require full price
disclosure by the packing industry.
I think these few things would be a lot
more useful than the current divisive
ALMA strategy that has been implemented.
